Right-wing parties carry Madrid region as Podemos suffers election debacle

Right-wing parties carry Madrid region as Podemos suffers election debacle The right-wing Popular Party (PP) defeated the ruling Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) and Podemos in the May 4 Madrid regional election, running a filthy, anti-communist campaign opposing all social distancing measures to halt the spread of the coronavirus. It was a debacle for the Podemos party, whose general secretary Pablo Iglesias announced his decision to retire from politics. The PP won 65 seats, four short of a majority in the 136-seat legislature, on 44.7 percent of the vote. The More Madrid party, a Podemos split-off, won 24 seats on 17 percent of the vote and the PSOE another 24 seats on 16.9 percent. Vox took 13 seats and 9.1 percent. Podemos fell to last place, with 10 seats on 7.2 percent, and the right-wing Citizens party collapsed. The PP carried 175 of Madrid’s 179 localities, including working class “red surburbs” that long voted for the PSOE and its allies.

Pain in Spain continues for British holiday homeowner

Message As a result of Brexit, which has changed the rules on buying Spanish property, more Brits are being hit by Spain’s hidden holiday home tax. That’s according to accountancy firm Spanish Taxes Online, which is based out of Lanzarote and was founded by British-born senior tax accountant Ben Einar Simkins. “Life used to be so much simpler for British owners of holiday homes in Spain,” Nick Ball, marketing director at Spanish Taxes Online, explained. “Buy a place in the Spanish sun, jet out whenever you fancy, stay as long as you like and rent out any vacant weeks to other holidaymakers.”

Podemos supports ending social distancing amid fourth wave in Spain

Podemos supports ending social distancing amid “fourth wave” in Spain The Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE)-Podemos government has announced that it will end the state of alarm on May 9. The state of alarm is the juridical mechanism regional governments use to impose obligatory social distancing measures, such as lockdowns, curfews, limitations on gatherings and mobility restrictions. Once presented as being less effective than nationwide lockdowns but more compatible with keeping workers on the job, the state of alarm is being ended as a signal that the ruling class seeks to lift any measures limiting the extraction of profits. This ending of social distancing will only accelerate the spread of the virus, provoking countless unnecessary deaths.
