Spokane County Jail staff have asked for a $32 million temporary jail to replace an aging facility near the airport they argue is near the end of its usable life.
The Geiger Jail facility is a 50-year-old former military base which can handle around 300 inmates. Spokane County Detention Services Director Mike Sparber said it has serious sewage and infrastructure problems that could cost millions to fix.

SPOKANE CO, Wash. An uptick in COVID-19 cases has been reported among inmates at the Spokane County Jail.
In a release Wednesday, county communications manager Jared Webley said there were 12 confirmed cases at the downtown facility, but no identified cases at the Geiger Facility. There are currently 784 inmates in custody between the two facilities.
As of this writing, there were no confirmed positive cases among jail staff.
Webley said the Spokane County Detention Services team is working with the Spokane Regional Health District to address and contain current cases.

Spokane corrections center reports 79 COVID-19 inmate cases

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) Authorities in Washington state have reported that more than half of the inmates at Geiger Corrections Center have tested positive for COVID-19 and are being kept in isolation and quarantined.
Spokane County Detention Services said that 79 of the 138 inmates at the facility tested positive as of Friday, The Spokesman-Review reported. The Airway Heights facility, located west of Spokane, has capacity for 360 inmates.
Department officials also said that 11 detention center employees tested positive.

The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.
