SPOKANE, Wash. – We were nearly in the clear, but now another resurgence of COVID cases are taking over much of the country, hitting unvaccinated people especially hard.
Masks are back on in Los Angeles and the Delta variant is tearing through largely unvaccinated communities. L.A. is seeing its highest number of cases since March. Vacation destinations like Florida and Nevada are also hot spots for the virus and, some vaccinated people are experiencing rare “breakthrough” infections.
In the Spokane community, COVID cases are quantified by the daily average of new cases per day by the Spokane Regional Health Department. The average last week was 29 cases. On Friday, July 15, it was 60 new cases.

SPOKANE, Wash. Two local nonprofits find themselves in a public dispute. The Women’s Club of Spokane says Jewels Helping Hands overstayed their welcome. Originally, Jewels leadership said the two had an agreement to stay inside the facility back in February, but the Club said that’s not the case.
This all started back in February when temperatures dipped dangerously low. Jewels Helping Hands came to the Women’s Club asking to use their space to house homeless people. The two sides met, and leaders at the Women’s Club said they didn’t hear back from Jewels and assumed the shelter lost interest but that’s not what happened. It was a shock for Club President Joshua Awesome when Jewels Helping hands moved in.
Here s what we know: This week, Spokane County got 4,600 additional vaccine doses. We know that 4,000 went to CHAS Health s mass vaccination center at the Spokane Arena. But we don t know where the other 600 went, because the state of Washington won t tell us or even tell the Spokane Regional Health District. Washington State Department of Health does not share allocations to individual providers, Danielle Koenig, the department s health promotion supervisor, wrote in an email. Yet the question of who gets vaccine doses and how many is a vital one. If the public knew which clinics were getting the most vaccines, they could know where to focus their efforts to get vaccinated.

SPOKANE, Wash. More than 1,000 people received a COVID-19 vaccine at the Spokane Arena by the end of its opening day Wednesday.
As of 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, only 350 shots had been administered. By the end of the day, 1, 164 had been given out.
Originally, CHAS Health expected to give out 500 vaccines per day. According to CHAS, technical difficulties early in the registration process contributed to more people having vaccination appointments than anticipated. CHAS said it was “committed to ensuring each person who had a vaccination appointment received their vaccination.”
