A Wiltshire earl was caught doing 45mph in a 30 zone – in an untaxed and uninsured Lexus. David Brudenell-Bruce, the earl of Cardigan, was found guilty in his absence on Saturday of speeding and driving without insurance or a valid MOT.
Swindon Magistrates’ Court heard police stopped the 68-year-old’s Lexus RX300 shortly after 4pm on November 17, 2019. The car was clocked at 45mph in the 30mph zone on London Road, Marlborough. Cautioned for the speeding offence, Lord Cardigan was said to have told the officers he was surprised. Checks revealed the vehicle did not have a valid MOT, was untaxed and uninsured, Wiltshire Police prosecutor Mike Smith told magistrates.
Swindon Magistrates Court PROSECUTORS dropped charges against five teenagers accused of taking part in a Penhill brawl after none of their key witnesses turned up for the trial. The five young men, all but one under 18, were alleged to have been part of a gang of up to 15 who went looking for another boy in a Penhill street on December 7, 2019. Only one man, Jay Mapstone, has faced justice for the attack. The 19-year-old was jailed for 16 months last September. Prosecutor Leigh Hart told Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Thursday that none of the Crown’s main witnesses had arrived for the trial “I’m not surprised, because there has been contact from both the police officer in the case and victim liaison unit to say three of the Crown’s witnesses have refused to engage,” she said.

A BURGLAR who stole a Japanese tea grinder will be sentenced later this month. Appearing before Swindon Magistrates’ Court, Billy-Jo Cosgrave, 24, of Pinehurst Road, pleaded guilty to a non-dwelling burglary. Prosecutors say he broke into the Paramount Building apartment block on Beckhampton Street on December 10, 2019, and stole a Japanese tea grinder worth £60. Gordon Hotson, for Cosgrave, said his client was awaiting sentence on other matters later in the month. He asked the magistrates to sentence the burglary on the same date. JPs agreed to the request. Cosgrave will be sentenced on January 25. He was granted unconditional bail.
