Community order for banned driver caught in BMW

By Advertiser Reporter Swindon Magistrates Court A CAR enthusiast who’s banned from driving was caught by police moving a project car onto his driveway. Lawyers for Lukas Karulaitis claimed he’d bought the BMW 328i intending to do some work on it outside his home in North Swindon. Tony Nowogrodski said the 22-year-old furniture deliveryman had been parking up the new car when he was caught by a PCSO on December 23 last year. Prosecutor Ben Worthington earlier told Swindon Magistrates’ Court that Karulaitis had produced his driver’s licence when he was asked for ID. He had initially been disqualified in 2019 after totting up 12 or more penalty points, Mr Worthington said. Last year, he was convicted of disqualified driving.

Suspended sentence for man who took knife into courthouse

Janusz Pielak, 59, told the justices last year that he had the “ordinary fishing knife” as he was due to go fishing with a colleague after his court appearance. He was working in the garden before being picked up and had put the secateurs in his bag. Swindon magistrates this week sentenced him to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, suspending the jail time for a year. Chairman of the bench Iain Cooper told Pielak: “If you commit any offences at all during that 12 month period you are more than likely to be sent to prison.”

Alleged rogue trader fraudulently claimed to have installed soakaway , court told

By Advertiser Reporter AN ALLEGED rogue tradesman will appear before Swindon Crown Court next month. Robert Hughes, 30, is said to have targeted two pensioners in Swindon in 2019 – allegedly telling one man he had installed a soakaway when he had not. Appearing before Swindon Magistrates’ Court, Hughes, of Cranleigh, Surrey, entered no pleas to three counts of fraud. He is accused of failing to disclose to two customers information about their rights to cancel proposed works and making a false representation to one man that he’d installed a soakaway. The offences were allegedly committed in October 2019. The case has been brought by Swindon Borough Council’s trading standards department.
