Career burglar nabbed in Secaucus, charged in three incidents: police

A career burglar has been charged with victimizing three businesses in Secaucus going back to February 2020, authorities said.
Secaucus police patrolling on County Road at 4 a.m. on March 1 pulled over Henry Singleton, 58, of Jersey City, knowing that he was wanted for prior offenses, Police Chief Dennis Miller said.
Singleton was charged with burglarizing a tractor trailer chassis at 501 Penhorn Ave. on Feb. 24, 2020, burglarizing a warehouse at 20 Enterprise Ave. on Oct. 25, 2020, and breaking into a trailer at 550 Meadowlands Parkway earlier on the morning of his arrest. He was also charged with theft in each incident, as well as receiving stolen property and heroin possession, Miller said.

Jersey City man must do 30 years in prison for murder and sexual assault ×
Cano was found dead in Lincoln Park.
Judge Patrick Arre has sentenced Jersey City resident Jorge Rios, 35, to 30 years in New Jersey state prison for the March 24, 2019, murder and sexual assault of Carolina Cano, 45.
According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, Shortly after 7:30 a.m., on March 24, 2019, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible body found in Lincoln Park in Jersey City.
Officers found the body of Cano, a Jersey City resident, in the lake in Lincoln Park.
Cano was pronounced dead at approximately 9:30 a.m.

Earlier today, Hudson County Superior Court Judge Patrick J. Arre, sentenced Jorge A. Rios,
35, of Jersey City, to 30 years in New Jersey state prison for the murder and sexual assault of Carolina Cano which occurred on March 24th, 2019 in Jersey City’s Lincoln Park, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement.
Arre sentenced Rios to 30 years for the first-degree murder charge, which carries a mandatory minimum of 30 years of parole ineligibility.
He also sentenced him to 10 years with a required 85 percent for the charge of aggravated sexual assault, which is to run concurrent to the 30 year sentence. Upon release, the defendant is subject to parole supervision for life and Megan’s Law.
Hudson County vaccination site targeting 75+ population this week

The Hudson County Vaccine Distribution Center in Kearny is prioritizing people who are 75 years old and older this week, officials said, part of a statewide effort to vaccinate the most vulnerable and at-risk populations.
The county’s vaccine appointment portal will only permit appointment times for the 75+ population this week, but in the event slots go unfilled, the portal will be reopened for all other eligible Hudson County residents. More than 300 residents over the age of 75 have already registered to be vaccinated on Monday, 30 of whom are over 90 years old.
Meet Bayonne’s first Hispanic city tax collector

Rosemarie Martinez continues to break barriers in Bayonne.
Martinez will be the first Hispanic in Bayonne history to serve as tax collector. She was also the city’s first Hispanic to work as chief of staff to Mayor Jimmy Davis.
“I am grateful to Mayor Davis and the City Council for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said in a statement.
Martinez was nominated by Davis, and the City Council unanimously approved it on Wednesday. She will serve in her new position from March 1 through Dec. 31. A four-year term will then follow starting on Jan. 1, until Dec. 31, 2025.
