Seven Lucky Ducklings Trapped in Storm Drain Saved by Huntington Beach Firemen
A brood of ducklings was recovering after being rescued from a storm drain by Huntington Beach firefighters.
The wayward baby ducks inadvertently waddled into a 30-foot-deep hole off Gothard Street on April 1, and became trapped, a Huntington Beach Fire Department spokesperson said.
The group of seven ducks was discovered by a passerby, who waved down a nearby fire engine, Eric Blaska told The Epoch Times on April 5.
Huntington Beach firefighters were initially able to help one duckling before calling the department’s urban search and rescue team for backup. The rescue team specializes in technical resources, confined space rescues, shoring, trench rescues, and heavy rescues.

High winds fueled a three-alarm structure fire that broke out at a Huntington Harbour residence Tuesday afternoon, sending flames into the attic of the home and causing massive amounts of smoke in the area.
Huntington Beach Fire Department spokesman Eric Blaska said multiple calls came in just after 4 p.m., including calls from witnesses who saw smoke issuing from the house off Venture Drive and called 911.
“With the high winds, we’re protecting the houses around it. Blaska said from the scene Tuesday while crews continued to battle the blaze. “We’re worried about embers flying off from the roof [the fire] is pretty stubborn, and the attic is pretty big.”

Tempers flared at Monday night’s Huntington Beach City Council meeting, as a clear divide has been established on the dais on the issue of mask usage during the coronavirus pandemic.
Mayor Pro Tem Tito Ortiz and City Councilman Dan Kalmick, each of whom were elected in November, were at the heart of the dispute.
Following a COVID-19 update by City Manager Oliver Chi and Huntington Beach Fire Department Chief Scott Haberle, Kalmick addressed the council. He noted that two of the seven members, Ortiz and Erik Peterson, were not wearing masks.
A fire has severely damaged one of the more recognizable houses in Surf City.
Firefighters responded to reports of a fire at the structure in southeast Huntington Beach known as the “Castle House” on Thursday night. The house is known for its unique medieval-style architecture, including gargoyles and a lion statue in the frontyard.
Huntington Beach Fire Department spokesman Eric Blaska said firefighters got to the house on Bermuda Drive at 5:58 p.m. Thursday and knocked down the fire in 13 minutes. The blaze appeared to have started in the attic, Blaska said, and the house was significantly damaged inside.
