HUNTINGTON â Dogs at the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Control Shelter will be able to enjoy more time outside after a barn improvement project is completed later this year.
The building is formally dubbed âThe Dog House,â but workers refer to it as âthe barn.â Built in 2013, the barn is used to give dogs another place to get exercise, said the shelterâs Executive Director Courtney Proctor Cross. Future improvements will give dogs more space to run.
One addition will be runs, or fenced-in pens, for each dog that include doors for animals to enter and exit the barn at will. Once finished, there will be runs for 25 dogs along the sides of the building.
HUNTINGTON â With aid from a grant, a local animal shelter is able to support pets with an on-site medical director.
The Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Control Shelter was recently awarded a $50,000 grant investment from Petco Love, formerly known as the Petco Foundation.
Courtney Proctor Cross, the shelterâs executive director, said the money would support a medical director at the shelter as well as other lifesaving measures. Cross said the shelter has received other grants in the past from Petco Love, as the shelter is a partner with the organization.
âThe big thing for us was that it made such a huge difference when we were able to hire a vet tech to be our medical director,â Cross said. The addition allowed someone to be over the shelterâs intake process and see to the general welfare and care for each animal.
