HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Halemaumau Crater eruption seemed to come out of nowhere, surprising Hawaii Island residents and even experts on Sunday night. Kilauea has been in a period of “non-eruptive unrest” since its 2018 eruption ended. That eruption in the lower East Rift Zone destroyed hundreds of homes and leveled entire communities. The eruption Sunday, however, is within the crater and authorities say at this time there is no threat to communities in the lower East Rift Zone.

State COVID count up by 156, Big Isle adds 21

December 19, 2020 at 1:21 pm Today, the State Department of Health confirmed 156 new cases of COVID-19 in the state, bringing the total number to 20,015. The Big Island has 21 new cases, bringing the island’s total to 1,790. The island has had 50 deaths from COVID-19 out of the state’s 281 total deaths attributed to COVID-19.  Hawaii County Civil Defense reports that 4 people are hospitalized.  On Friday, Hilo Medical Center reported 2 patients with COVID-19 in the ICU.  Yesterday at 5:10 p.m., Kona Community Hospital reported no patients with COVID-19 in the hospital.   North Hawaii Community Hospital does not provide a report. There are now two FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines, one by Pfizer/BioNTech and one by Moderna.  The State is receiving both, and has a priority list for how vaccines will be distribut4ed.

VIRUS TRACKER - Dec. 15: 57 New COVID-19 Cases - Honolulu Civil Beat Hawaii health workers were the first to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday. Reading time: 4 minutes. Health officials reported 57 new COVID-19 cases statewide on Tuesday, including 35 on Oahu, 10 on the Big Island, eight on Maui, and four Hawaii residents who were diagnosed out of state. No new fatalities were reported. The state’s COVID-19 vaccination rollout began Tuesday at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. The first vaccines will be reserved for essential health care workers, long-term care facility residents and staff and first responders. Another delivery of 3,900 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is expected Wednesday, followed by nearly 45,000 additional doses scheduled to arrive by the end of the month, according to Gov. David Ige.

US passes 300,000 deaths from COVID as vaccinations start

According to the Johns Hopkins Dashboard, the United States has added 270,573 cases in the last 24 hours. In the last day, the number of people who have died in the U.S. from  COVID-19 increased by 1,640.
