The new Hong Kong National Security Law, passed unanimously by China’s National People’s Congress on May 28, modifies the Hong Kong Basic Law, which was adopted by a previous National People’s Congress in April of 1990. This change may have profound effects on the economic relations between the United States and China. In this essay, we focus only on the economic aspects while acknowledging that the longer-run geopolitical aspects may be much more important than the short-run economic consequences discussed here.

Gatchalian volunteers to be vaccinated to enhance PH vaccination program
Senator Win Gatchalian has volunteered to be vaccinated with jabs of CoronaVac, manufactured by Beijing-based biopharmaceutical company Sinovac, if allowed under the government s prioritization framework for the nationwide immunization campaign to combat the coronavirus. Alam ko may prioritization tayo ngayon. Kung hindi naman lalabag dito, I would volunteer to be vaccinated by Sinovac. This is to show to the public our support to the vaccination program, Gatchalian said.
The senator said he sent word to the National Policy Against COVID-19 chief implementer and vaccine czar Sec. Carlito Galvez Jr. over the weekend of his willingness to participate in the national vaccination program to help address the high vaccine hesitancy in the country.

Defiant Hong Kongers yesterday risked arrest outside a local court in the biggest demonstration in months, as dozens of the territory’s most prominent democracy advocates were jailed on subversion charges and authorities in Beijing moved to limit the opposition’s role in future elections.
The arrests of 47 opposition figures including key protest organizers Joshua Wong (黃之鋒), Benny Tai (戴耀廷) and Jimmy Sham (岑子傑) over their roles in an informal election primary last year represented the most sweeping use of a national security law imposed by China.
