The fair comprised 157 students representing 23 schools in eight Maine counties tuned in to present virtual research or engineering projects to a panel of judges and attend events. High school students from across the state competed for prestigious state titles and over $1 million in scholarships and awards.
Tattoo artist finds home on Main Street
ELLSWORTH After a year-long absence, the buzz is back on Main Street.
A spirit of renewal is in the air. Empty storefronts bustle with activity. Artful window displays are going up on both sides of the street.
Born and raised in Ellsworth, Jaime Parent is part of the post-pandemic recharge and new beginnings happening in the city’s historic shopping district.
The tattoo artist has departed State Street and taken up residence fittingly under the stylish Luchini Building’s pink arches at 112 Main St. Across the street, a whirlwind of activity has been taking place at 97 Main, where Poppy & Polka Dot maven Amanda Beals has moved from farther down the street.
School Board approves $23.6 million budget
ELLSWORTH A $23,680,977 school budget for 2021-22 found unanimous approval from School Board members April 27. The $721,182 increase represents a 3.14 percent hike from the current year’s budget, but the amount to be raised from local property taxes will only see a 0.06 percent bump, or $6,354.
“I think the taxpayers will be very thankful,” Chairwoman Jennifer Alexander said.
Higher than usual revenues are helping offset the impact on local appropriations for education, including $152,364 more in tuition from out-of-Ellsworth students for regular and special education instruction and Bridge Academy students for a total of $1.85 million. State revenues are also up, just over $200,000 for a total $4.32 million in subsidy. The state contribution to the school district debt service stands at $2.12 million, down about $100,000.
