suggests that the ancestors of these bears migrated to the island from Sakhalin, an island just north of Hokkaido that is now part of present-day Russia. The bears likely lumbered over a land bridge that connected Sakhalin and Hokkaido at various points in the
Pleistocene, a time period that lasted from 2.6 million to about 11,700 years ago.
Although brown bears no longer traipse around Tokyo, their fossils — dated between 340,000 and 20,000 years old —have been discovered in several locations on Honshu Island, researchers noted in a new report, published Tuesday (Aug. 3) in the journal
Royal Society Open Science. That raises the questions of when and how the Honshu bears first got to the island, but unfortunately, there's little fossil evidence of the beasts' migration.

Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) is developing a hydrogen power generation plant for local refiner Seibu Oil Co. which will start operations in August this year, it said in its Group Vision 2030 report published on June 1.
