Hopkinsville, KY, USA / WHOP 1230 AM | News Radio May 25, 2021 | 2:55 PM As COVID restrictions ease, the Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Department is ready to turn up the summertime heat via grills and events with the 3rd Annual Squealin’ on the Square Barbecue Festival on Friday, June 4. “Squealin’” is also the leadoff event of Parks and Rec’s newly-branded Sounds at Six series for 2021 (formerly known as Fridays@5). The other Sounds at Six dates are July 16, August 27 and September 10. Be prepared once again to be “swined and dined” when barbecue ribs, chops and chicken takes center stage for this popular event, sponsored this year by HWEA, HES/EnergyNet and Pennyrile Rural Electric. This year’s Squealin’ on the Square will feature up to 10 barbecue teams battling for cash prizes and trophies in each of the food categories.

Hoptown Hose Down

May 25, 2021 | 2:19 PM With summer heat on the rise, the Hopkinsville Fire/EMS Department and Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Department are teaming up again to help the community cool down. The 2nd Annual Hoptown Hose Down partnership, beginning Tuesday, June 1st, will have an HFD-provided pumper truck traveling to six different parks from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays during June to safely spray down attendees with a water hose and nozzle throughout Hopkinsville. Use of the extra truck and personnel from the Fire Department will not take away from any regular services provided or emergencies responded to by HFD/EMS. Parks employees on site will be facilitating the mobile spray parks.

3rd Annual Squealin on the Square BBQ Festival Set For June 4

The Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Department has announced the 3rd Annual Squealin’ on the Square Barbecue Festival kicks off Friday, June 4, with the festival to also serve as the leadoff event of Parks and Rec’s newly-branded Sounds at Six series for 2021, formerly known as Fridays at 5. Parks and Rec Superintendent Tab Brockman says this year’s Squealin’ on the Square will feature up to ten barbecue teams battling for cash prizes and trophies in each of the food categories. He says the five-person teams, which includes one head chef and up to four assistants, will cook BBQ throughout the day to get ready for judges to sample portions from each team before determining the winners in the three categories: chicken, ribs, and chops. The winning teams will be determined based on presentation, taste, and tenderness of their entries. Brockman says the winners will receive $250 and the coveted Squealin’ trophy in each meat division.

Movies in the Park to feature Harry Potter Friday

Movies in the Park will feature the most popular Harry Potter movie Friday night. Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation Superintendent Tab Brockman says be at Debow Recreational Complex at 8 p.m. Friday to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Officials announced that Tie Breaker Family Aquatic Center, which will celebrate its 15th season this year, will delay opening of the facility until Friday, June 18 th. Closed last summer due to the pandemic, the water park traditionally opens the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. The park will be open daily until local schools start in August, dialing back to a Saturday-Sunday only schedule through Labor Day and closing Monday, Sept. 6.
