CINCINNATI (FOX19 - For the fourth time in just over a year, a member of Cincinnati City Council is charged with a crime committed in connection with his elected office.
Councilman Wendell Young was indicted Thursday by a Hamilton County grand jury on a felony charge of tampering with records, court records show.
If convicted, Young, 75, of North Avondale, faces a maximum punishment of three years in prison.
“At some point between January 3, 2018, and October 16, 2018, Young knowingly and with the purpose to defraud, destroyed text messages that belonged to a government entity,” Special Prosecutor Patrick J. Hanley said in a news release.

CINCINNATI (FOX19 - The attorney for Cincinnati City Councilman Wendell Young tells FOX19 NOW he anticipates charges against Young Thursday.
A special prosecutor has been investigating whether to criminally charge Young and four current and/or now-former Cincinnati City Council members over text messages they exchanged in 2018, secretly deciding public city business.
On Wednesday, the special prosecutor, Patrick Hanley, told FOX19 NOW Young rejected a plea deal.
âI canât tell you what that plea deal is, but he can do whatever he wants. He rejected a plea deal. Thatâs sort of accurate,â Hanley said.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Calls began almost immediately for Councilman Wendell Young to step down after his indictment Thursday morning.
Young, 75, a council member since 2010, was indicted by a Hamilton County grand jury on a felony charge of tampering with records in connection with an investigation into text messages he exchanged with four other council members in 2018.
“At some point between January 3, 2018, and October 16, 2018, Young knowingly and with the purpose to defraud, destroyed text messages that belonged to a government entity,” Special Prosecutor Patrick J. Hanley said in a news release.

A former police officer convicted of sexually assaulting an intoxicated victim was HIV-positive at the time of the attack, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said Wednesday.
Detersâ office filed a new charge of felonious assault against Anthony Pecord, 48. Pecord has already been sentenced to four years in prison over the same incident â but prosecutors didnât know he was HIV positive until after his conviction, according to Deters.
Neither did the victim.
âThe trauma of a sexual assault is something that changes you forever,â Deters wrote in a statement. âTo add to that the fear of contracting HIV is horrifying for the victim.
