State, districts lift mask restrictions With COVID-19 infection rates waning, mask requirements are being lifted locally as well as statewide. On Tuesday, May 11, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued an Executive Order (2021-23) empowering South Carolina parents to decide whether their children should wear masks in public schools throughout the state. With the order, the governor directed the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control - in consultation with the S.C. Department of Education - to develop and distribute a standardized form that a parent or legal guardian may sign to opt their child out of mask requirements imposed by any public school official or public school district.

Georgia: Appling County public schools will be closed on Friday, Feb. 19, due to possible severe weather conditions. Staff should report at 9 a.m. if roads are safe to travel, according to the school system. Appling Christian Academy will also be closed on Friday. Jeff Davis County public schools will be closed on Friday, Feb. 19, due to possible road conditions after more rainfall is expected Thursday afternoon. Jeff Davis County staff should report to work at 9 a.m. if it is safe to travel. If road conditions are severe, staff should contact their building principal or supervisor.

Department of Education (SCDE) announced that it will provide $84,264,890 in additional federal Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) funding to all public schools districts and special schools to support reopening efforts.  The funding can be used for four specific purposes, including safety measures and personal protective equipment, hiring of school nurses, hiring of staff to provide one-on-one instruction and support services for struggling students, and technology equipment to support online learning.
