ACLU calls on Supreme Judicial Court to order investigation into Springfield Police Department over excessive force allegations
Updated Apr 06, 2021;
SPRINGFIELD The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against the Hampden district attorney’s office over what the advocacy group characterizes as a failure to investigate allegations of excessive force by the Springfield Police Department.
The 353-page complaint petitions the Supreme Judicial Court to force a closer examination of accusations leveled in a U.S. Department of Justice report made public in July.
In the report, federal investigators concluded members of the department’s narcotics unit routinely resorted to punching suspects in the head and neck and filed shoddy reports over physical altercations, if they filed any at all.
