Hampton’s annual MLK Jr. commemoration will honor Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and local heroes virtually Lisa Vernon Sparks, The Daily Press © Jonathon Gruenke / Daily Press/The Daily Press/TNS Hundreds of people gathered outside the Hampton Roads Convention Center to witness Monday s dedication ceremony for the Martin Luther King Jr. and Hampton Heroes Memorial Plaza January 21, 2019. Names of local heroes, as well as King, are displayed on the four rectangular panels. Civil Rights icon Rosa Parks and abolitionist Harriet Tubman blazed a trail of change in different locations but share a Hampton connection. Tubman was a Union Army spy and scout, and a conductor on the Underground Railroad. The abolitionist also served as matron of Fort Monroe’s contraband hospital in 1865 during the Civil War.
