National Trust completes repairs on Allan Bank, Grasmere

REPAIR work to a treasured building steeped in literary history has finally been completed after over a year of its ground floor being held up by scaffolding. The team at Allan Bank house in Grasmere has made the most of time closed during the pandemic to tackle longstanding woodworm damage to structural timbers in the cellar and ground floor of the former residence of William Wordsworth. Thanks to a financial boost from the government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund, the £45,000 project was able to go ahead between January and March this year. For over a year and a half the ground floor of the building has been supported by scaffolding in the cellar, where the damp environment resulted in serious woodworm issues.

National Trust looking for new catering partner for Beatrix Potter s Hill Top

The National Trust is looking for local catering businesses to run cafes at four of their visitor attractions in the Lake District. The cafes are at Acorn Bank in Penrith, Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top in Near Sawrey, Claife Viewing Station on Windermere’s western shore and Wray Castle in Ambleside. Gareth Fuke, area manager for food and beverage in the Lake District, believes this offers a fantastic chance for catering firms and is eager to welcome the new providers at the visitors centres. He said: “This is a great opportunity for a local food operator to grow their business within an already thriving visitor attraction, in a beautiful location.
