Nothing about awards season for 2021 has been usual. Ceremonies have been pared back, red carpets have been largely virtual and star-studded audiences are a thing of the past.
But it’s not just the pandemic that has made this awards season different, the awards themselves are changing, too. In fact, they are breaking records.
Across the Golden Globes, Grammys and Sunday night’s Bafta Awards, women are breaking records. From the most female directors to ever be nominated in categories across the major film awards, to women of colour taking home best director and actress gongs for the first time, 2021’s unusual awards season has been a breath of fresh air for gender and racial diversity.
Multifaceted talent
Regina King is a Hollywood veteran having worked in film and television for just over 30 years.
With her decades-long career, King has witnessed the entertainment industry slowly make moves to become more inclusive, more acknowledging and celebratory of artistry created by African-Americans.

During the 2020 awards season King reached new levels of success as Hollywood applauded her directorial efforts with “One Night in Miami,” a film led by an all-Black and male cast. But even while riding the wave of newfound star power, King was not remiss about pointing out Hollywood’s lingering problem of not having diverse guilds that hold the voting power for

I mean, there are lots of other things you might think of as you take your seat – the leg room, the food menu, whether the WiFi works, how unspeakably annoying the stranger sitting next to you might turn out to be, or even worse, if the cabin steward will be one of those ghastly comedian types cracking jokes and dancing their way through the safety routine?
But ultimately, the one constant thought process most of us when we board an aircraft that s going to fly very fast very high up in the air is a simple one: Please get me to my destination in one piece.
