NBC is counting on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to make the reforms necessary to allow the network to resume carrying the Golden Globe Awards.
Frances Berwick, NBCUniversal’s chairman of entertainment networks, told reporters Friday that the company believes the Globes will eventually return to NBC’s air. On Monday, NBCU took the extraordinary step of scrapping its annual Globes telecast that would have aired in January 2022 amid the growing scandal about the lack of diversity and questionable ethical activities of HFPA members.
Cancel culture. Cancel culture. Cancel culture.
Huh. Nothing. I thought maybe if I said it fast three times in a row Ellen DeGeneres would magically appear on my laptop screen.
But she did not. Although soon enough she won’t be appearing on my TV screen anymore either, after she said in an interview Wednesday that she is ending her daytime talk show next May, after 19 seasons.
DeGeneres said it was in part because “it’s just not a challenge anymore.” Wouldn’t you know, that’s the same reason I quit the NBA. The 43% drop in ratings for “Ellen” probably had nothing to do with it.
Can (and Should) Anything Replace the Golden Globes?

AWARDS BEAT
The Golden Globes are gone, at least for a year, and jockeying for that show’s spot on the awards calendar has begun.
On Wednesday, two days after NBC announced that it will not broadcast the 2022 Golden Globes ceremony to give the Hollywood Foreign Press Association more time to reform, the Critics Choice Awards claimed the date of Sunday, Jan. 9 for its 27th annual ceremony. That is almost certainly the date that the Golden Globes would have been held, if studios and NBC had not finally insisted that the HFPA solve its deep-seated problems, which include a lack of diversity and questionable journalistic ethics.

NBC pulled the plug on the Golden Globes for 2022. The broadcast network announced it will not air the awards show next year following a February LA Times investigation into ethical lapses at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the voting body of the Golden Globes.
The HFPA has weathered accusations of corruption for years, but the allegations took on a new urgency this year, as it was revealed that the HFPA counts no Black members among its ranks.
