Houston tourism takes another blow as COVID keeps conventions away By Katherine Feser, Staff writer
Houston’s convention and tourism business may be the greatest long-haul coronavirus victim.
CERAWeek by IHS Markit, the annual energy conference that brought thousands of international visitors to Houston and was the first to cancel when COVID-19 began to spread last year, said Thursday it would not hold its in-person gathering in 2021.
With pandemic shutdowns approaching their first anniversary, the event, which was to be held March 1-5, will go virtual.
The conference, which draws CEOs, energy ministers, government officials and industry leaders from around the world, attracted 5,300 delegates to downtown’s Hilton Americas Hotel in 2019, and the move, which follows the cancellation this week of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, is a sign that a recovery for the region’s convention and tourism industry is still distant.
