But how do mass vaccination sites differ from local sites and pharmacies? In a press conference on Jan. 25, Baker announced the addition of more mega capacity and efficient sites throughout the state. Vaccination sites are established in every region to provide maximum efficiency geographic spread and equity for our residents and our goal is to keep building capacity but we can only move as fast as the federal government ships vaccines to the Commonwealth, Baker said.
The state marks these sites as high volume, large venue sites that offer the most appointments. The plan for each site is to begin vaccinating up to 500 people per day and ramp up to 5,000 people per day, with an estimated weekly total of up to 76,000 by mid-February across all sites. According to the Feb. 11 COVID-19 vaccination report, 54,866 total doses have been administered by mass vaccination sites. Availability for vaccine appointments is updated every Thursday on the website.

Massachusetts officials say they will let caregivers taking people ages 75 or older to get vaccinated request their own appointments to get their first dose, even if they don’t qualify yet.
Starting Wednesday, caregivers can sign up for a “companion appointment” as long as they attest to being the caregiver of a person being vaccinated, according to the COVID-19 Command Center. The caregiver has to sign up for a separate appointment, and only one caregiver will be eligible to get vaccinated alongside the person who is 75 years or older.

Baker said he will increase the 25% capacity limit to 40% effective at 5 a.m. Monday based on recent declines in coronavirus hospitalizations and case counts. The 25% capacity limit has been in place since Dec. 26.
When the stricter capacity limits were announced, the seven-day average positive test rate was 5.94% and 1,991 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized. As of Wednesday, the positivity rate was 3.3% and 1,635 people were in hospitals for COVID-19 care. Baker said the state has seen positive trends in COVID-19 metrics since 2021 began.
