Michigan’s highest-ranking senator has repeatedly used sexist language when referring to the governor, used the word “hoax” when describing the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, insinuated without evidence there was some election fraud - but not enough to overturn the results - called one of the largest employers in his district his “No. 1 enemy” and got censured by local members of his own party.
The spokesperson for embattled Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, is taking on a new role in Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office.

Mike Shirkey is becoming a household name, as Michigan’s Senate Majority Leader makes headlines with controversial comments about the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
A Republican from Jackson County, Shirkey has been in politics since 2010. He’s been a conservative voice in the area for decades, after starting a manufacturing business in the 1980s.
