HOOD RIVER, Oregon (KPTV) A 10-year-old girl drowned on Wednesday after falling out of an inflatable raft into the Columbia River, according to the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called out to a report of a child missing in the water near the Nichols Boat Basin in Hood River just after 2 p.m. The sheriff’s office said the girl from Portland was riding on a raft with another family acquaintance when she fell out. She was not wearing a personal floatation device at the time, according to the sheriff’s office.

Joseph Edward Dean was found conscious and breathing near the Rock of Ages Ridge Monday morning, May 10
A 71-year-old hiker who went missing near the Horsetail Falls trail system over the weekend was found Monday, May 10, conscious and breathing.
Rescue crews reported around 9 a.m. that Joseph Edward Dean had been discovered near the Rock of Ages Ridge more than 24 hours after he was reported missing.
At 8:33 p.m. Saturday, May 8, the Multnomah County Sheriff s Office received reports of an overdue, missing hiker. Dean had reportedly sent a text message to his wife stating he was lost somewhere on the Rock of the Ages Trail.
A 71-year-old man who was lost in the Columbia River Gorge has been rescued.
Joe Dean texted his wife Saturday night that he was lost on the Rock of the Ages trail.
Searchers found him Monday morning near the ridge of the trail. He was conscious.
They used a wheeled stretcher to bring Dean down the trail. He was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.
Dean also reported that when he became lost, he followed Horsetail Creek downward, hiking during the day and stopping at night. While Dean was not prepared to stay overnight, he was carrying thermal leggings, a jacket and a balaclava. Dean was able to ration snacks, but did run out of drinking water.
