NEW ULM The New Ulm Public Utilities Commission (NUPUC) will hold a special work session Tuesday to provide information on the recent natural gas price increase due to the polar vortex. The work session is scheduled for 3 p.m. in the City Hall Chambers before the regular PUC meeting. The work session is intended as an informational meeting to explain the recent jump in natural gas prices. Earlier this month, New Ulm Public Utilities (NUPU) warned residents their gas bills for February could be the highest in years. Natural gas prices are increasing across the country. When temperatures drop, customers turn up the heat in their homes, increasing the demand for gas.

Sean O Brien, who lost re-election bids in November, are among 31 applicants for a seat on a panel that regulates utilities in Ohio. French, O Brien and others are vying for a spot vacated last month by Public Utilities Commission of Ohio Chairman Sam Randazzo. Randazzo resigned after the FBI searched his Columbus house and Akron-based FirstEnergy Corp. disclosed a $4 million payment was made to an entity meeting the description of one owned by Randazzo as part of its internal investigation into the House Bill 6 bribery scandal.
