The tears seep in as she recalls past visits, usually 3 or 4 hours long, and the humanity and empathy she has been missing without them. Washington, 40, of Detroit, hasn’t just been living the lonely existence COVID-19 has created for many. She’s one of roughly 33,000 people currently incarcerated by the Michigan Department of Corrections, the state prison system with the highest number of prisoner COVID-19 cases per capita, according to The Marshall Project. On the latest episode of the Detroit Free Press podcast “We Lived It,” Washington explains the difficulties and solace she has found in life behind bars during a pandemic.
