Deputies respond to accidental gun shot victim

On Monday, February 8th at 11:37 am,  Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call of an accidental gun shot victim in the 11000 block of Morrissey Road in Grass Lake Township, Sheriff Gary Schuette announced in a press release. The victim, a 33 year old man from Summit Township was concealed carrying his pistol when it got caught on a piece of machinery and discharged the round striking his leg.  The victim was then transported to Henry Ford Allegiance Health where he was treated for non life threatening injuries. Responding officers found the pistol was registered to the victim, and alcohol did not play a factor in this incident.  The investigation has been handed off to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office for official review.

He is a concealed pistol license holder and was carrying a concealed gun, which is registered to him, when it got caught on a machine and fired, police said. The man was taken to Henry Ford Allegiance Health by ambulance, where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Summit Township registered the most reported cases within the county with 36 during the last week, according to county data, with the city of Jackson and Blackman Township reporting 28 and 23 cases, respectively. As of Monday, Feb. 1, an additional eight people have died of COVID-19 since Jan. 12, marking 196 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. People between ages 50-59 have the highest rate of positive cases at 16.9%, while people between ages 20-29 make up 16.5% of positive cases, the health department reports.

Aivery Banks, 17, of Kalamazoo, and Anthony Jones III, 17, of Battle Creek, are facing one felony count each of open murder and felony firearms in the Aug. 25, shooting death of Lataveon Cosey, 16, of Blackman Township. Co-defendants Banks and Jones had a semi-virtual preliminary examination Jan. 29, before Jackson County District Judge Allison Bates. After five witnesses testified, Bates said there was enough evidence for probable cause and bound the case over to Jackson County Circuit Court.
