Healthcare construction primed to rebound faster than other sectors Getty Images
While nonresidential construction is expected to continue to lag through much of 2021, healthcare is projected to fare better than other sectors like office and manufacturing, according to a new report.
Nonresidential building construction starts were down 24% in 2020 compared to 2019, which is expected to drag overall construction spending in 2021, according to a new report from commercial real estate firm JLL that projects a 5% to 8% spending dip this year. While many long-term healthcare capital projects were put on hold last year, JLL expects those to resume by the end of the year.
Dive Brief:
The construction industry in 2020 adopted in one year what would have normally taken three, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to commercial real estate services firm JLL s latest State of Construction Tech report.
This acceleration was most evident in several high-impact areas of construction tech digital collaboration, scanning, safety, wearables, building information modeling (BIM) and computer-aided design (CAD). Achieving moderate growth were technologies related to drones, jobs and employment, robotics, augmented and virtual reality and digital twins.
In the next few post-pandemic years, JLL estimated that the foundational technologies, those that form the basis of any tech program, will be BIM, CAD, artificial intelligence and digital collaboration.
