The Highbrook vaccination centre in Auckland was forced into closure by overcapacity issues on three occasions before walk-in vaccinations were halted.
On Thursday last week, the site on Highbrook Drive in East Tāmaki stopped entry to people seeking a vaccination for 30 minutes, with some being mistakenly turned away, as the carpark had become too full.
Speaking to
Stuff, Cheryl Bale said while she hadn’t been turned away, she had waited for more than two hours to get her vaccination. Falling into Group Three, by virtue of being both over 65 and suffering a chronic medical condition, she said the wait had been far too long when she went in for her appointment on Monday - especially as she had been told while booking that it would be quick.

Wait times at the Highbrook vaccination centre have been causing frustrations among those forced to wait. Because she suffers from an auto-immune disease, she also tries to limit her exposure to large crowds.
On Sunday, North Shore Councillor Richard Hills welcomed the opening of the clinic. “They’re fitting out our local jab shop at Highbury Mall in the old Warehouse, and I’m so excited about that,” he said on Twitter.
LAWRENCE SMITH/Stuff Hills told
Stuff it was “fantastic news for our community”. He said the location of the clinic would make it “really accessible” for those wanting to get vaccinated. It is “great for bus access from all over” and parking, he said.

Frontline emergency service workers were among the first to get their COVID-19 vaccinations as Auckland’s second large-scale community vaccination centre opened in Mt Wellington today.
The Mt Wellington site on Leonards Road, joins Highbrook Drive, East Tamaki as the second vaccination centre capable of vaccinating up to 1,000 people per day once operating at full capacity.
St John’s Ambulance staff and Police, many of whom are based in Mt Wellington, stepped up to have their vaccinations on opening day. Police staff are being vaccinated due to their role in protecting border and MIQ facilities while ambulance staff are part of the Government’s phase two scheduled roll out of frontline healthcare workers.
