The toll climbed by 3,876 to 2,49,992. The governments of Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Tuesday said they will issue global tenders for procurement of Covid vaccines as the domestic supply fails to keep up with the rising demand amid the fierce second wave of the pandemic, reported PTI.

Though the new variants of the virus may partly be responsible for the explosion in the number of cases, there is no indication the mutant versions are more lethal, added the director of the Trivedi School of Biosciences, Ashoka University, amid mounting worries about what is fuelling the second wave in India. Addressing an online event organised by the Indian Express, Jameel noted that it is a little too early to say if the Covid wave has peaked.

Jaganmohan Reddy has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider the transfer of Covaxin know-how to other players in order to accelerate vaccine production. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister on Monday, Reddy conveyed the urgency to ramp up vaccination capacities as the only viable solution to tackle the Covid pandemic. The state, which is currently reporting around 20,300 new cases everyday, has imposed partial curfew to check the spread of the virus.
