Serum Institute of India (SII) cut the price of its Covishield vaccine to Rs 300 from Rs 400 following calls for a reduction.
Calling it a “philanthropic gesture,” CEO Adar Poonawalla tweeted that the move “will save thousands of crores of state funds going forward… This will enable more vaccinations and save countless lives.”
It is learnt that the Centre had asked SII and Bharat Biotech, which makes Covaxin, to reduce prices.
“On Tuesday, a meeting was held between senior health ministry officials and manufacturers,” a government official told ET.
The move comes ahead of India s plan to lower the threshold for vaccines to 18 from May 1. In this next phase, half of domestic vaccine production will go to the Centre and the rest to state governments and private hospitals.
While Maharashtra health secretary Pradeep Vyas’s letter addressed to the heads of both pharmas wanted to know the procurement price and the availability of vaccines before starting the next phase, state health minister Rajesh Tope said they had not received any response as yet to the letter from either company.
Goa government may not be able to start vaccinating people in the age bracket of 18-45 years from May 1 as it is yet to get vaccine stock. The directorate of health services has placed orders with SII, but they have not got a commitment for the supply yet. The vaccination of a new category of people would be subject to receiving the supply of vaccines, said Dr Jose D’Sa, director of the directorate of health services.

Serum Institute of India (SII) the maker of the most used COVID-19 vaccine in the country on Wednesday announced a cut in price of the jab it plans to sell to states to Rs 300 per dose from the earlier Rs 400.
This follows widespread criticism of its pricing policy as it had sold the initial doses of Covishield to the central government at Rs 150 per dose.
SII s CEO Adar Poonawalla took to Twitter to announce the philanthropic gesture.
