Puri Jagannath Temple (File photo) BHUBANESWAR: Reopening of the Jagannath Temple on Wednesday is expected to give a boost to the pandemic-hit tourism sector besides reviving the economy and livelihood of vendors in Puri. Jagannath temple is considered as the main source of income for servitors, local street vendors, businessmen, hoteliers, auto-rickshaw and taxi operators, who have been struggling to make their ends meet since the shrine’s closure on March 20 in the wake of Covid outbreak. Nearly 80% of the tourists, who visit Odisha in a year, come to Puri for a darshan of the deities and enjoy the sprawling sea beach. Not less than 70,000 devotees offer prayers in the temple on a given day. On major festive days, the footfall of devotees usually touches nearly 1.5 lakh.
