D&R Greenway Land Trust announces the permanent preservation of its 316th property since its 1989 founding, less than a half mile from where the land trust first purchased land for preservation. This multigenerational half acre, made up of scenic woodland along Hopewell-Wertsville Road, is the second parcel of land preserved by the Marino family with D&R Greenway. Donated by the Marino siblings, preservation of this roadside woodland ensures continuation of the rural character of the area.
During its first decade, the Marino family was among the earliest preservationists with D&R Greenway. Their initial preserved property contributed to the core of the land trust’s Sourlands Ecosystem Preserve that now protects over 3,000 acres within New Jersey’s largest contiguous forest.

Two incumbents from the Hopewell Borough Council are in an uncontested Democratic primary race for two open seats on the Borough Council.
Councilwoman Samara McAuliffe and Councilwoman Debra Stuhler are the two incumbents seeking re-election in the 2021 Democratic primary on June 8. The two open seats each carry a three-year term.
Both McAuliffe and Stuhler are pursuing a second term on the Borough Council.
McAuliffe settled in Hopewell Borough during 2004. She grew up in Hopewell Borough and Hopewell Township and attended school in the Hopewell Valley Regional School District. McAuliffe would go on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University.
Hopewell Township adopts $24.7M municipal budget for 2021
Members of the Hopewell Township Committee have adopted a $24.78 million budget for municipal operations in 2021.
Mayor Julie Blake, Deputy Mayor Courtney Peters-Manning, Committeewoman Kristin McLaughlin, Committeeman Kevin Kuchinski and Committeeman Michael Ruger voted “yes” for the budget’s adoption on May 17. The budget’s introduction occurred on April 19.
Since introduction the budget has increased from by $121,298 from $24.6 million to $24.78 million, due to increased appropriations to legal services, streets and roads salary and wages and public health salary and wages.

Hopewell Valley school board officially begins search for new superintendent; Smith announces retirement
The Hopewell Valley Regional Board of Education is searching for a new superintendent after the announced retirement of current Superintendent Thomas Smith.
The school board approved an ad hoc Superintendent Search Committee to help identify the district’s next superintendent and plan to include as many district stakeholders in the process through surveys and focus groups.
“At this point in time, the search committee’s main focus is collecting stakeholder input,” Board President Deborah Linthorst said.
A community survey was already made available to the public through May 14.
