The man who was fatally shot by police at a McDonald’s drive-through in Montgomery County, Maryland, has been identified. And police said that a thorough investigation into what happened is underway.
Officers responded to a complaint that he refused to pay for food he ordered or exit the drive-through.
Montgomery County police Chief Marcus Jones said during a news conference that officers saw a handgun in the front seat. They ordered Leroux to exit at gunpoint and requested backup.
Jones said the officers tried to de-escalate the situation for 30 minutes and called for a negotiator. They formulated a plan and called Leroux on his phone, making several attempts to talk to him.

Three days after a 21-year-old man was fatally shot by police officers outside of a McDonald’s restaurant, a Maryland police chief provided details on Monday about the “armed standoff,” but did not say what prompted officers to kill the suspect.
Friday’s incident outside the fast food restaurant ended with “a show of force” before a negotiator could reach the scene, Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones told reporters.
Jones said the department’s hearts are with the family of the victim, Ryan Leroux of Gaithersburg, as well as the police officers who responded to the call.

Police are continuing to investigate a shooting at a Montgomery County McDonald s that happened over the weekend.
GAITHERSBURG, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - Police are continuing to investigate a shooting at a Montgomery County McDonald s that happened over the weekend.
The caller told police that a customer had ordered food and was refusing to pay or move his vehicle from the drive-through lane. An officer responded to the scene and approached a white Honda CRV parked in the drive-through lane with a 21-year-old male driver.

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) revealed the identity of the man who police said was shot and killed by officers following an armed standoff at a McDonald’s restaurant in Gaithersburg.
Ryan Leroux, 21, of Gaithersburg, is the deceased, Police Chief Marcus Jones said during a press conference Monday. Jones said a person called 911 Friday night to report Leroux was in the drive-thru refusing to pay for his food or leave. A responding officer approached Leroux’s car and immediately saw a handgun in the passenger seat next to him, according to police.
Additional officers arrived and Jones said a sergeant was able to speak with Leroux on his cell phone and tried to convince him to exit his car, but he was not cooperating. Police also called in for a negotiator, Jones said, however there was use of force resulting in officers shooting Leroux before the negotiator arrived.
