New Arizona Bill Would Require Early Ballots Be Notarized

A newly introduced bill could cause some Arizonans to have a harder time casting early ballots in future elections.  Republican Rep. Kevin Payne has proposed notary services be required to accept an early ballot. That means for voters who requested early ballots, they would have to get a notary to attest that the signature on their ballot envelope belongs to them.  Howard Fischer/Capitol Media Services Kevin Payne in 2018. Payne says this proposal will curb the potential for election fraud, however, Secretary of State Katie Hobbs disagrees.  We cannot legislate based on misinformation that came out of this election and make up problems that don t need to be solved, Hobbs said. 

Arizona House Democrats Respond To Budget Plan

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey answers questions on Sept. 24, 2020, about the spread of COVID-19. Gov. Doug Ducey released his state budget proposal on Friday. Elements of the plan have bipartisan support, but Democrats are speaking out against a proposed $200 million tax cut. The tax cut is set to expand to $600 million in its third year. Arizona House Minority Leader Reginald Bolding (D-Laveen) said the plan takes steps in the right direction but does not do enough. “The governor s budget could have far more impact than what we saw,” Bolding said. “This is not the time to propose $1.2 billion in tax cuts over the next three years when Arizonans are still hurting, the pandemic is not under control and the vaccine rollout has been slower than expected.”

Ducey Prioritizes COVID-19, Vaccines And Economy Ahead Of State Of The State Address

Gov. Doug Ducey addresses the Legislature during the 2020 State of the State address. Before his annual State of the State address, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said he’ll remain focused on weathering the coronavirus pandemic and distributing vaccines to Arizonans. The address is a tradition that marks the beginning of a new legislative session. A new class of 30 senators and 60 representatives will be sworn in Monday afternoon, before Ducey gives a speech outlining his policy priorities in 2021. At an event hosted by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce on Friday, Ducey defended his administration’s response to the pandemic. The governor has garnered national attention for Arizona’s inability to control the spread of the coronavirus. Last week, Arizona had a higher rate of new cases than any other state in the country.
