A 97-year-old veteran got a surprise from his community for his birthday that he will never forget.
A veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, George Vanvekoven goes by “Van” in his community and is known for telling captivating tales about his time in the Air Force.
So, his community decided they wanted to give back to this special member of their community.
Local restaurant Mission BBQ, members of local motorcycle groups, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the Fire Department, and American Honor Guards made a collective effort to celebrate Vanvekoven’s birthday with a parade, WWAY reported.

The Wilmington Police Department have confirmed that David Bostian, Jr. was found dead at his residence this morning by officers responding to a 911 call.
The cause of death is still under investigation and is not being called a homicide investigation at this time but no further details have yet been released; according to WPD, more information will be provided once a thorough investigation is completed.
Earlier this morning, Bostian was arrested by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with two counts of sexual offense by a government employee; according to the Sheriff’s Office, a female victim reported to law enforcement that the offenses allegedly took place in 1992, when she was a 16-year-old student at New Hanover High School.
An assistant principal at Noble Middle School fatally shot himself hours after he was arrested on allegations of having an inappropriate relationship with a former student in the 1990′s.
Neighbors and community members are reacting after a New Hanover County assistant principal was found dead Friday morning.
The body of David Bostian was found at a home located at 3304 Tipton Court when officers from the Wilmington Police Department responded to a 911 call around 9:05 a.m.
Fire trucks responded to the scene first followed by the police, according to a neighbor who watched the response. The neighbor - who did not want to be identified - said they didn t know the cause of death or have any further information.
The death comes after allegations that Bostian had an inappropriate relationship with a student in 1992.
“I want to offer my deepest condolences to everyone affected by this case,” said New Hanover County Schools superintendent Dr. Charles Foust in the press release. “We will wrap support around the Noble Middle School students and staff members during this difficult time. We also will remain vigilant to protect children and provide safe learning environments in all of our schools.”
Bostian, 59, was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual offense by a government employee Friday.
