Appointments for COVID-19 vaccination clinics at Hanover Area High School this week were booked by last Friday, even before they were publicized, frustrated readers said Monday.
Megan Griffith, of Dallas, said her mother, Sandy Bonawits, called a toll-free number 18 times Monday morning to schedule a vaccination appointment before she got through, and she waited on hold for 51 minutes before she spoke to a scheduling representative for Walmart, the sponsor of the clinics.
Bonawits, 63, of Plymouth, qualifies for a vaccination during Pennsylvaniaâs Phase 1A rollout because she has a heart condition, Griffith said.
âThe representative she spoke to was kind of surprised that the information about the clinics opening Tuesday was just in the paper this morning. She told her the appointments at Hanover Area had been booked since Friday,â Griffith said. âThere was an available appointment in Centre County, but that would be too far for her to drive.â
Walmart will host COVID-19 vaccine clinics at Hanover Area High School starting this week, the school district superintendent confirmed on Saturday.
The state Department of Health recently posted a file on its COVID-19 vaccine distribution page listing shipments of the vaccine manufactured by Pfizer for the week of March 1, and the list of shipments included 1,170 doses for Walmart for a clinic at the high school.
Hanover Area Superintendent Nathan Barrett on Saturday said the first three clinics are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with three more set for March 30 through April 1.
Barrett said Walmart representatives told him they wanted a centralized location thatâs handicap-accessible, and they would provide a toll-free number to schedule a vaccination in an effort to assist members of an older population who qualify for a vaccination during Phase 1A of the stateâs rollout but who might not be technologically savvy to do so online via computer.

Which Pa. schools had the largest number of arrests in 2019-20?
Updated Feb 15, 2021;
The Pennsylvania Department of Education’s annual Safe Schools report for the 2019-20 school year showed a noticeable drop in reported arrests.
Districts are required to submit their misconduct reports, both criminal and academic infractions, to the state every year. Reporting sometimes changes from year-to-year, but no changes were made last school year.
Last year, the top three criminal reasons why students were in trouble statewide were:
Possession, use, or sale of tobacco or vaping 8.34 percent
Fighting 8.14 percent
Minor altercation 5.42 percent
Here’s a list of the schools that had the largest number of arrests, and the crime that was most common at each school.
