Once we have received your details we will accept you! You can join at any time and don't need to be a UoA student..
.
If you may not be very involved with our group (i.e.
are overseas) but would like to keep up to date with what we get up to, the best thing to do is just to like our *PAGE*.

.
Q: How much does it cost to join?.
A: Nothing! But some of our events – such as our sanctuary trips – have costs ($10pp) to cover our drivers’ petrol and toll road expenses, and our 3-day Raglan volunteering trips have grocery, petrol, and accommodation costs.
.
.
____________________________________________.
.
Q: What AUARG events can I get involved with?.
A: We do fundraising vegan sausage sizzles, day-long volunteering trips to animal sanctuaries, 3-day volunteering trips to the Raglan animal sanctuary, and social events such as drinks and Walking Vegan Food Tours of the CBD.
Here is a link to a post with all the events for this semester on it https://www.facebook.com/auanimalrights/photos/a.1546555028950425.1073741828.1545240402415221/1674434449495815/?type=3&theater ; otherwise you can see the ‘Events’ tab in our group page; https://www.facebook.com/groups/438241649589792/events/ .

Q: How is the dissection campaign going?.
A: Great, thanks! We’re currently working with AUSA to roll out a Conscientious Objection Policy for all first-years to be able to opt out of animal use exercises in their papers.
We have a petition with AUSA to get this going, and AUSA will also be using their various channels to put out a survey about their experiences with animal use in second semester.
AUSA and AUARG see this as the start of incremental change towards opt-out policies and/or optional alternatives to animal use being put in place for all such papers over time.
If you have any issues in this area please come to us for support or advice – we’re more than happy to help.

.
Q: Help! I’m required to participate in an animal use exercise at uni and I’m uncomfortable doing so..
A: As mentioned above, we’re currently working on this issue with AUSA (and have been campaigning for students in this position for the last two years).
.
.
If you’re in first year you may be able to opt out of the exercise and sit in a different part of the lab to watch the exercise take place without having to participate; you will still be tested on what you have learned from the exercise in the same manner as the rest of the students.
If you have issues with opting out please let us know; a fill-out form will hopefully be available to students to use for this purpose by semester 2, 2016.
.
.
If you’re second year or above, at this point the best thing you can do is speak to your lecturer / supervisor and explain that you are uncomfortable participating in the exercise.
It’s currently at their discretion as to whether or not they allow you to opt out and the university has no alternatives in place for you to do instead.
We’re working on it!.
.
No matter who you are, if you want help or just support while going through this process, please message our page and we’ll help as best we can.

Q: I’ve found a lost or injured animal on campus or a baby bird on the ground without its mum!.
A: If the animal is a companion animal (i.e.
a cat, dog, or other pet-type animal), and is sick or injured, call the SPCA on (09) 256 7300.
.
.
If the animal is a bird, contact Bird Rescue: http://birdrescue.org.nz/contact-us/.
.
.
If the animal doesn’t fit these categories call us on 021 0530377 and we will help..
.
We also have a cage stored on campus to catch and transport the animal with so once you have made contact with the SPCA or another rescue or sanctuary, call us on 021 0530377 and we will help you with logistics.

Q: Can I get involved in other animal rights groups too?.
A: Absolutely! We see AUARG as a ‘stepping stone’ to involvement with the AR movement beyond uni life.
The following are a few excellent organisations to get involved with, either based in or with branches in Auckland:.
.
* Direct Animal Action (DAA): grassroots activist group; campaigns and regularly protests for animal rights with a current focus on rodeos and colony cages / egg farms; https://www.facebook.com/DirectAnimalAction.
.
* New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society (NZAVS): established in 1978; campaigns for the abolition of experimentation on animals; https://www.facebook.com/NZAVS.
.
* Save Animals From Exploitation (SAFE): established in 1932; campaigns for animal rights across the board; https://www.facebook.com/SAFEnewzealand .
.

.
If you don’t think you have time to volunteer with other such organisations but would like to make monetary contributions towards animal rights / rescue, consider supporting one of these local sanctuaries / organisations:.

Q: Are our degrees at Auckland Uni printed on actual goatskin? Cause that’s gross.
.
A: No – this is just a technical term used to describe the resilient parchment used for the degrees.
Your degree is NOT made of dead animal – the University has confirmed it here: https://uoa.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3528/~/graduation-certificate-material :) .
