Detailed description is Loving God.
Loving People.
Our Story.
In mid-August of 2015, as I was talking with Randy Abbott – a pastor I mentor, but who also rides a Harley-Davidson – I said I was thinking about riding a Harley! And he said, “Well, if you do, you need to take the class!” So I said I would! And later that day, I drove to Cave Springs where Harley-Davidson is located, and signed up for their Basic Rider Course that would be held in mid-October.
.
.
Then the day came.
And after arriving at 8:00 AM I saw that among the six of us, I was clearly the oldest.
So after some introductory questions from the instructor, I asked if he’d ever had anyone older than me take the test.
He said he had; a 72-year old whose bike fell over and broke his arm.
“Great!” I thought.
“I’m sure my failure will help thin the herd!” Well, after the two days of book and skills testing, only three of the 6 passed, and I was one of them! I could hardly believe it! So I sent a text to my kids telling them the news, and my son texts, “Woohoo!” And my daughter texts, “Please don’t die.
Congratulations.” And yet even my Terry is happy for me!.
.
Later that night, around 2:20 AM, I awaken and immediately recall that I’d passed the test! With that I began thanking God for the whole experience! And it was right at that moment I had this distinct thought: “I want you to plant a church!” And sensing that it was to be in St.
Charles I said, out loud, “Lord, is this You?! Because if it is, I’ll do it, but you’ll have to confirm it for me, because I don’t want to go off on some nutty idea if it isn’t from You!” And with that the name of the church came to me: CrossPointe.
I got up, Googled the name, and found there wasn’t one in St.
Charles.
And then the words, “Loving God.
Loving People” came to me.
So I wrote them down and went back to bed..
.
That morning, during our Quiet Time, I look at Terry and say, “I think I have something to tell you.” And after she simply says “What?” I relate what I think God wants me to do, and she gives me a look like, “You’re kidding, right?” After more discussion as to what this may mean to us, we agree to pray and see if the Lord confirms that this is His will.
Later that morning I meet Bob Anthony for lunch.
He’s an old college and grad school friend, and my wife and he knew each other back in high school.
We talk about a number of things; however, I don’t mention the church idea at first.
It just seems so, well, crazy! And yet, as we’re about to go our separate ways, I sense this gentle nudge to at least say something about it.
And his response is immediate.
He said he thought the same thing when we were at DQ but didn’t say anything; however, he’s been putting his tithe checks into his Bible waiting to see where the Lord would lead he and his wife to invest their lives for God’s kingdom.
(I tell this to Terry that evening and it encourages both of our hearts.) .
.
That afternoon, however, I go to the License Bureau to take my state written test for motorcycles.
I fail it, so I start to leave; however, an officer tells me, “Stand over there!” Which I do, because if an officer tells me to “stand over there” I stand over there! Then another officer (who knows me from a previous church where I had served) calls me to the counter and, smiling, asks if I’d like to take the test again.
I say “yes!” and pass it! As he’s congratulating me he says I need to take the paper he gives me along with my Passport or Birth Certificate when I go to the license bureau to apply for a new license, one that would have an “m” on it to show I’m licensed to drive a motorcycle..
.
.
After arriving home and locating my Passport, I get ready for the next day.
At 8 AM I put my papers and Passport in my car and meet Randy Abbott at BreadCo in Wentzville.
I ask him if he’ll drive me to a repair shop in Lake St.
Louis as I need my car looked at.
He drives me over, I drop off my car, and he takes me home.
After walking into the house I check my papers and realize my Passport’s missing! I get a little panicky so I call Randy and ask if it’s in his car.
It isn’t.
I call the repair shop owner, but he’s in another town.
He then calls his work but his employee doesn’t answer, so he calls back to tell me the same.
.
.
So I retrace my steps, going back to BreadCo to see if it had fallen under the table where Randy and I had met.
Upon arriving at BreadCo I see Eric Darst, pastor of Lifepoint Church in O’Fallon, MO.
He asks how I’m doing and it’s evident he’d like to talk, but I just sort of dismiss him by saying, “I can’t talk right now, Eric; I’ve got to find my Passport!” Walking past him to where Randy and I’d sat I asked the current occupants to check under their table to see if my Passport is there.
They search, and search, and search, but it isn’t.
Time’s a wasting! Then I return to the front and find 5 to 6 people standing in line, with Eric again indicating he’d like to visit.
But I said “I can’t talk right now; I’ve got to find my Passport!” .
.
I wait, and Wait, and WAIT until the I finally get to the front of the line: I ask if they have my Passport, and they quickly reply, “No.” (I thought, “I wish I’d just gone to the front of the line and asked and saved all this TIME!” I later realized that God was wanting to re-teach me an old truth: God not only orders our steps, He orders our stops.) A bit exasperated, I return to Eric.
Now I can talk, and though now I’m a bit frustrated about the Passport.
I relate what I think God’s telling me re.
a new church (he’d planted Lifepoint a couple of years ago; my father-in-law and I helped do some work on it to prepare for their Grand Opening).
I tell him I realize that I don’t know anything about starting a church, so what can he share with me.
He talks about being true to what God’s leading me to do, etc.
.
At that time Jeremy Plymale calls.
I tell him about the church idea and he says he’s on his way to talk to Eric! That BreadCo is even in his sight! So he shows up and we talk..
.
I ask Jeremy if he and CrossHaven (where we were members) would be willing to sponsor CrossPointe.
He says yes, though he adds that he can’t give us anything.
I tell him I don’t want or need any money; God will provide that; it just seems more natural for our church to be an extension of CrossHaven.
He suggests we have our first worship at their new building.
I thank him for that, but I still sense God has something else in mind..
.
Eric and Jeremy talk about process, and while there are two ways to do this (one is to work through the Missouri Baptist Convention, the other is to be sponsored by a church) I opt fort the second approach.
I tell the guys I’m thinking our initial “soft launch” will be January 3; our “lift-off” will be on Easter, March 27.
Then they tell me Ben Hess is joining them.
Within a matter of minutes he walks in.
I hug him, tell him what I’m thinking, and he says with a smile on his face, “What’s an old guy like you doing starting a church?!” I say, “Don’t you talk that way to me, bro! If Moses can begin his ministry at 80, I’m doing just fine at 67! I’ve got lots of fuel left in these tanks!” Then he proposes a prayer, and we stand to huddle-up for a prayer of empowerment from him.
.
.
.
.
So who are these guys: Eric, Jeremy, and Ben? I learn at this “chance meeting” that Eric is responsible for new church starts in St.
Charles County, Jeremy would now be my spon-soring pastor / church, and Ben is the Church Planting Catalyst for the Missouri Baptist Convention, responsible for new church starts for the state of Missouri!.
.
So, like a bullet hitting a bullet – or more like 3 bullets hitting each other simultaneously – God sees to it that I “misplace my Passport”, which brings me to BreadCo, where in turn I have to wait, Wait, WAIT to finally learn it isn’t at BreadCo! And at that precise moment I meet three of the most important men I’d need to know and connect with in regards to this particular decision.
Amazing..
.
Then I get a call from the repair shop owner: my Passport is still in my car.
And as I drive to retrieve it I begin laughing out loud, thanking God for His having gone to all this length just to encourage and confirm to me that I am, indeed, following His will! I retrieve my Passport and take it with me to the License Bureau.
And after giving the gal my paperwork and saying, “Here’s my Passport” she says, “I don’t need your Passport!” I said, “Excuse me?!” She repeats herself.
Again, amazing! God’s plan all along was to have that officer say I needed my Passport and then uses my misplacing it to get me in the right place at the right time to meet the right people encouraging me to make the right decision.
Now that’s incredible!.
.
Later we meet Terry’s folks for lunch and tell them what we’re thinking God’s leading us to do.
And her mother says, “That’s the most natural thing in the world!” Then Bob, her step-father, says, “You don’t know this, but last Sunday (Oct.
11) I was meditating in my chair and looking up said, “Lord, if I could have any wish, I’d like to help pay to build a church…where my family could join us in worship!” Wow! And after hearing his words God confirmed in my heart these words, “I’ve got this! You don’t need to worry about money; I’ll take care of whatever needs may come up!”.
.
And, as He has from that point to now, I’m confident He will as we follow the Spirit’s leadership into the future!.
