Appearing in an afternoon hearing before U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, Diana Lopez, 58, admitted to collecting overtime pay for hours on special shifts designed either to purge old evidence from the facility or to dispose of expired prescription drugs deposited at kiosks across the city. June 16, 2021 at 3:00 PM Shares0 In a shocking and terrible coincidence, on March 4, 2018, two cryopreservation storage tanks–half a country away from each other–failed on the same day. Numerous patients’ cryopreserved embryos and eggs — their hope for future children — were heated above safe storage temperatures, and irreparably damaged. One of those tanks was at University Hospital in Cleveland. The other was known as “Tank 4,” and was located at Pacific Fertility Center in San Francisco. Tank 4 contained 2,500 embryos and 1,500 eggs, and on that fateful day, literally imploded. (The plaintiffs even included the shocking images of the imploded tanks in their court pleadings.) Last week, three years after the incident, five of the victims received a jury award totaling $15 million in compensation for pain, suffering, and emotional distress against the tank manufacturer, Chart Inc.

The Federal Reserve signaled Wednesday, June 16, 2021, that it may act sooner than previously planned to start dialing back the low-interest rate policies that have helped fuel a swift rebound from the pandemic recession but have also coincided with rising inflation. The Fed's policymakers forecast that they would raise their benchmark short-term rate, which influences many consumer and business loans, twice by late 2023. They had previously estimated that no rate hike would occur before 2024. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh, Pool, File)

Jessica Hill / AP The Connecticut state House is taking action on a marijuana legalization bill in a special session Wednesday, but it’s not the same version of the bill that the Senate passed on Tuesday. Speaker Matt Ritter said the House Democrats decided to take action on the original version of the bill that they didn’t get to before the session ended last week. Governor Ned Lamont said he would veto the amended Senate version that passed in special session. “When the governor said he was going to veto it. That was the end of the conversation for a lot of people,” Ritter said.

Por Ginny Reese Foto: Getty Images Chris Paul, point guard for the Phoenix Suns, is now out for an indefinite amount of time due to the NBA's health and safety protocols, reported ESPN. His absence jeopardizes his availability for the Western Conference finals, according to ESPN's Malika Andrews. The health and safety protocols for the NBA are ever-changing and evolving to keep up with CDC guidelines as more and more individuals become vaccinated. If Paul has been vaccinated, his absence from the team will likely be much shorter. Phoenix won against the Denver Nuggets in the conference semifinals. Next up, they will face either the Utah Jazz or the LA Clippers for the Western Conference Finals. They are scheduled to begin next week.

ANALYSIS/OPINION: Twenty-seven years ago, the U.S. Postal Service opened a new post office building in Mesquite, Nevada, a city of just under 21,000 some 90 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Apart from a plaque at the entrance denoting its construction in 1994, the facility isn’t much different from thousands of others in the United States today. This wasn’t always the case, as historian Cameron Blevins points out in “Paper Trails: The US Post and the Making of the American West.” From the mid-1800s to well past the turn of the century, postal operations were highly political, semi-privatized, and provided what the author calls a “gossamer network” of outlets uniting a diverse and sometimes unstable frontier.

A handful of liberals in the Senate have threatened to vote against the bipartisan deal, which they say does not do enough to fight climate change or income inequality. If any Democrats oppose the plan, more than 10 Republicans would need to back it for it to hit the 60-vote threshold to pass legislation in the Senate. Some Democrats have suggested their party could approve a physical infrastructure plan with Republican support if skeptics get assurances their priorities will be addressed later. Democrats could then move to pass broader investments in child and elder care, green energy, education and health care on their own through budget reconciliation.

ICYMI: Glob Lessons This past weekend, Tribeca Film Festival premiered Glob Lessons, a coming of age story that tells the story of two amazing friends. It is an incredible, triumphant film with something for everyone. Check out more information below. SYNOPSIS: Alan is an insecure, perfectionist, mostly-closeted man from Minnesota. Jesse is an unpredictable, mysterious woman from West Virginia. They’re complete opposites – and they’ve found themselves partnered together on a low-budget children’s theatre tour for indifferent audiences across the Upper Midwest. Unsettled by each other, and each quietly suffering from emotional wounds of their own, they’re a study in avoidance—until the reality of their forced proximity compels them to open up. As their friendship deepens, they begin to go rogue with their shows—rewriting them and redesigning them in order to better represent their voices, and as they do so, they find the courage to begin writing a new life for themselves.

AlessandroPhoto/iStock (NEW YORK) — The U.S. Marshals Service, one of the nation’s oldest law enforcement agencies, lacks the resources needed to ensure the safety and security of federal judges and other people it's meant to protect, the Department of Justice's Office of Inspector General found. “The USMS does not have adequate proactive threat detection capabilities to monitor the current threat landscape, including in online and social media settings,” the inspector general report, released on Wednesday, said. “Resource limitations and competing agency budget and staffing priorities have impeded the USMS's ability to provide the level of protective services that it has determined is required given the increasing number of threats directed at the judiciary.”

(The Center Square) – Juneteenth is now a holiday in the state of Illinois. Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill Wednesday that made Illinois the 47th state to recognize the day. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when the last slaves were freed in Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. “Today is a win for Illinois and a win for our country,” said La Shawn Ford, D-Chicago, the bill’s sponsor. “It is not a Black holiday, but an American holiday that we all must celebrate.” Under Illinois law, state employees and educators will get June 19 off as a paid holiday if it falls on a weekday. June 19 is on a Sunday next year, so the first paid holiday will be in 2023.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, speaking next to a large poster of a Black man whose back bore massive scarring from being whipped, said she would be in Galveston this Saturday to celebrate along with Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. “Can you imagine?” said the rather short Jackson Lee. “I will be standing maybe taller than Sen. Cornyn, forgive me for that, because it will be such an elevation of joy.” The Senate passed the bill a day earlier under a unanimous consent agreement that expedites the process for considering legislation. It takes just one senator’s objection to block such agreements.
