For over 25 years I have been a teacher and performer of improvisational comedy.
In the year after my son died, it was this improv that kept me sane.
By it’s nature, improv deals with the here and now.
Every week in rehearsals and performance was like a small vacation from the thoughts of grief that consumed all other aspects of my life.
But even more than the break from the oppressive sadness, improv did something I was completely unaware of at the time, it kept my emotions open and flowing.
It taught me that laughing and enjoying life, even in the midst of tragedy, was not only acceptable, but it was downright necessary.
It allowed me to flex the emotional muscles, making it easier to direct the sadness into constructive grieving.
Did the tears stop in my life, of course not, they probably flowed more freely, but that is the goal.
Grief is not something you can beat or avoid, it is a necessary process that you must go through and emerge from ready to move forward with life.
Learning to laugh again, surrounded by others who have suffered similar loss, keeps the emotions open, allowing you to recognize your emotions, and channel them into the healing we all need.
After all, much like tears and sadness, laughter is an uncontrollable reflex emotion that comes whether you want it to or not..
I recently heard Susan Stroman, Tony Award winning Broadway director and choreographer speak about this very thing.
Her husband Mike Ockrent was to be the director of MEL BROOKS’ THE PRODUCERS on Broadway, but he became ill and died before the show took shape.
Mel Brooks pursued Susan, who up until then had not directed on Broadway, to take the reins and be not only the choreographer, but the director as well.
She told him she didn’t think she could do; the grief was too strong.
Mel Brooks begged her to do it, not only for the show, for her own well-being.
He told her, “You can cry before you come to work, and cry when you get home, but during the day at the theater, I promise you we will laugh and live, and it will give you new life.” She trusted him, and took the job, and today says that her relationship with Mel Brooks was the strongest she has ever experienced in the theater, and credits him with saving her from overpowering grief..
