Detailed description is This project is funded wholly by the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
In Wisconsin, cardiac arrest causes over 6,500 deaths annually.
The likelihood of surviving cardiac arrest is a dismal 10%.
When bystanders immediately provide CPR to a cardiac arrest victim, survival rates double or even triple.
Currently in Wisconsin the bystander CPR rate is extremely low, 19%.
A bill was recently passed requiring all students graduating from high school be trained in CPR.
This legislation is a great step forward for improving survival, but it includes no funding, teaching tools, or guidance to schools on how to best implement a CPR program.
Our project will create tools and establish best practices for schools to teach CPR in Wisconsin.
This will create a system change that ensures schools have the infrastructure to offer on-going high-quality CPR training for all students, leading to all Wisconsin citizens being a key link in the chain of survival, ready to act if they encounter a cardiac arrest victim.
Ultimately improving state-wide cardiac arrest survival rates.
