It is my goal to help my students develop a love and appreciation for music.
By tailoring lessons to each student’s needs, I believe students can learn to express themselves musically.
I will guide each of my students in setting goals according to their interests and abilities and they will be given many opportunities to share their music skills.
When teaching a student, I seek to not only guide them on their musical journey, but to give them an opportunity to grow as a person.
I hope their music lessons will give them the opportunity to challenge, understand and express themselves.

My career as a music educator in the public education system has allowed me to adopt this philosophy.
I have instructed in a variety of instrumental settings (concert band, jazz band, ukulele, and recorder), choral music, musical theatre and composition.
I have also worked as a pianist and accompanist in chamber groups, music festivals, and in the church.
I continue to develop my skills as a music educator by participating in a variety of professional development activities.

My classroom experience has also given me an opportunity to teach music to students of many different abilities, backgrounds and interests.
This has enabled me to learn how to quickly assess a student’s needs so that I can effectively teach them.
It has also taught me that any student, regardless of ability, can experience the joy of making music.

I integrate many methods and ideas in my teaching to provide a complete music experience.
Lessons may include learning pieces of music from a book, composing/writing music and/or learning how to improvise.
Music lessons will not only include playing the piano, but also singing, listening, movement and games.
A favourite game in my studio at the moment is “blindfolded melody playback” in which the students have to play back a melody with their eyes closed.

I strive to focus equally on music literacy (reading music) and musicianship/rote learning to help a student become an independent music learner in the future.
For students with special needs, I seek to provide them with the opportunity to experience the joy of music making that is appropriate for their abilities.
Above all, I want lessons to be fun, engaging and fulfiling so my students can reach their full potential..

Family is also key to a student’s success in music.
I believe that students learn best when they have a supportive family environment.
Parents will be encouraged to participate in lessons in addition to providing support for practicing habits, music performances and overall music learning.
Families will be given access to materials to assist their children in their musical journey.
Each student has a practice binder with practice cards to sign each week, practicing tips and goals to help them succeed.
The students enjoy selecting something from the prize bin as a reward for having regular practice habits.
I also regularly update my Facebook page with articles, ideas and performance dates.

Learning music allows for a student to become aware of the world around them.
I emphasize learning the history behind the music my students are currently working on.
During a lesson we may read a biography of a composer, or watch a performance video of the original version of a piece we are learning.
This not only helps them perform the music well, but gives them an understanding of the many different cultures around the world throughout history.

Recitals, music festivals and examinations are a few of the ways students can perform in a formal setting.
I also encourage students to regularly perform for their families and peers to build confidence and instill a sense of joy in making music.
