Fires destroy 2 churches on Canadian Indigenous reserves June 21, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail OLIVER, British Columbia (AP) — Two Roman Catholic churches on First Nations reserves in British Columbia have burned to the ground in overnight fires, Canada’s national police force said Monday. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said a patrol officer saw fire come from the Sacred Heart Church on the Penticton Indian Band reserve early Monday morning. By the time the officer arrived on scene, police say the church was fully engulfed. Less than two hours later, the RCMP in Oliver, British Columbia were called to St. Gregory’s Church, located on the Osoyoos Indian Band reserve.

New Zealand Energy Corp. Announces Proposed Share Consolidation Wellington, New Zealand--(Newsfile Corp. - June 21, 2021) - New Zealand Energy Corp. (TSXV: NZ) ("NZEC" or the "Company") announced today the Directors have approved a consolidation of its share capital on the basis of one (1) new common share for every existing ten (10) common shares (the " Consolidation"), subject to regulatory approval, including approval of the TSX Venture Exchange. Effective on or about 23 June 2021, NZEC will complete the Consolidation. Where the exchange results in a fractional share, the number of common shares will be rounded up to the next greater whole number of common shares if the fractional entitlement is equal to or greater than 0.5 and shall, without any additional compensation, be rounded down to the next lesser whole number of common shares if the fractional entitlement is less than 0.5 and, in calculating such fractional interests, all common shares registered in the name of and held by such shareholder shall be aggregated. The Directors believe the Consolidation should enhance the marketability of the common share as an investment and will facilitate additional financings to fund future operations. A new CUSIP number of 650158207 replaces the old CUSIP number of 650158108 to distinguish between the pre- and post- consolidated shares. The Company's name and trading symbol will remain unchanged.

Lionel Desmond, a veteran of the Afghan war who was diagnosed with PTSD, killed his wife Shanna, their daughter, his mother and himself in their home in Upper Big Tracadie in Jan. 2017. Shonda Borden, Shanna Desmond’s sister, took the stand Monday. Borden told the inquiry about an instance where Desmond dreamed about his military service in Afghanistan. “I guess he had a bad dream, and he grabbed her by the throat at this time,” she said. “She woke up and she was like ‘It’s ok, it’s just me- Lionel, Lionel it’s just me’ kind of thing, (and) he kind of snapped out of it.”

In March 2020, the U.S. closed its northern and southern borders to leisure travel to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. DHS has extended the closure on a monthly basis. "To reduce the spread of #COVID19, the United States is extending restrictions on non-essential travel at our land and ferry crossings with Canada and Mexico through July 21, while ensuring access for essential trade & travel," DHS wrote on Twitter. The agency noted that Canada and Mexico have been making progress fighting the coronavirus pandemic and said it is working with health officials in all three countries on how to safely ease restrictions on crossing the northern and southern border.
EDMONTON -- In celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day, students from an elementary school in north Edmonton are working on a mural. Classmates from St. Gerard Catholic Elementary School took the day to create and paint artwork on the Yellowhead wall with Indigenous symbols, recognizing First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures. “The importance behind every single one of them is to recognize every group,” Michelle St. Jean, a Grade 5 and 6 teacher at St. Gerard, said. “We want Indigenous peoples to feel important, and today is really important for them to be recognized.” The City of Edmonton approached the school to take part in the project a while back. After some discussions, the schools faculty collectively decided the best day to execute the project would be on the national day.

EDMONTON -- A man is dead after a collision with a gravel truck near Wetaskiwin last Friday. RCMP received a call around 9 a.m. about a serious crash on Highway 2A near Township Road 472. Police said a car was travelling north in an “erratic manner” when it went into the lane of oncoming traffic and struck a gravel truck heading south. Emergency medical services and fire services attended the crash but the 41-year-old driver and lone occupant of the car was pronounced dead on scene. RCMP said the driver of the gravel truck was uninjured. The name of the man will not be released. Wetaskiwin RCMP are investigating.

LONDON, ONT. -- London resident, Stephen Karchut, is expressing shock and deepened sadness after finding out his Pride flag was ripped from his front porch around 7 p.m., Sunday evening. Video surveillance shows four teenagers approaching Karchut’s property with one of the four tearing down the Pride Flag that was zip-tied to his front porch. “You see Blue Jays flags, you see other country’s flags, Canadian flags. None of them have been noticeably missing except ours,” says Karchut, who believes this was a targeted attack on himself and the LGBTQ community. Karchut adds that he never expected something like this to happen to himself and his partner in London, “To have a flag that symbolizes our very existence, torn down in a month that is supposed to celebrate who we are, just really, really cuts through you.”
