In 1940, the Kentucky General Assembly passed enabling legislation allowing local farmers to petition and establish Conservation Districts.
By 1954, there were Conservation Districts in all 121 Kentucky counties.
The Muhlenberg County Conservation District was organized on October 20, 1945.

Kentucky's Conservations Districts are a subdivision of the state goverment (Kentucky Division of Conservation), and have been organized for the purpoose of assisting landowners/landusers in the following ways: (1) solving soil & water resource issues, (2) setting priorities for conservation work to be accomplished, (3) coordinating the federal, state, and local resources necessary to accomplish the work, and (4) providing leadership at the local level and means for interested local citizens to work together to achieve desired results.
Conservation Districts work closely with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Kentucky Division of Conservation (DOC), Kentucky Division of Forestry, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Farm Service Agency (FSA) to ensure landowners/landusers conservation needs are met.

The Muhlenberg County Conservation District is a member of both Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts (KACD) and National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD).
Being a member of these organizations, MCCD has an active voice at the state and natinoal level.
