NAMI Boulder County evolved from an organization called Families and Friends of the Adult Mentally Ill (FFAMI), which was founded in Boulder in 1977 by Mary Jean Willis.
FFAMI members attended the founding convention for NAMI National in 1979.
At the time there were about 250 support groups for families of persons with mental illness that had sprung up spontaneously around the U.S.
Today, NAMI National members number more than 220,000 in all 50 states, with 1200 state and local affiliates.
