Detailed description is The ABLE program is developing hydro- and aqua-ponics growing techniques using recycled materials.
The ABLE (Autism Behavior Learning in Education) program at Whitefield School serves special education students who need more support than is typically available in a resource setting.
One of our teachers, James Willigar, has had an interest in alternate growing methods for years and has provided the impetus for starting this project which will integrate hands-on lessons in corre curricula while growing food and fish for our school food pantry as well as to sell to the wider community.
To that end we have secured a grant from the Perloff Family Foundation to build a 10X24 greenhouse.
We hope to begin construction very soon.
We will start with hydroponically-grown vegetables with a future goal of expanding the greenhouse and insulating it to create a 4-season environment to grow fish and plants.
The fish will create nutrients which will be used to nourish the plants.
We will be exploring different methods of growing plants from raft systems to drip systems, and others.
We will also be focusing on composting and vermiculture.
