Jody Strauch Lundberg believes your home should express your personality -- who you are and what you like.
And if your house doesn't already have those kinds of features, well, she may be able to help with that..
.
Out of the Box, a store Jody and her husband, Steen Lundberg, opened last June, is filled with mostly re purposed unique building items.
There are big things -- over-sized chandeliers and oak fireplace mantels -- and little things, such as dozens of ball bearing brass hinges and oiled bronze towel racks..
.
One-of-a-kind items, like a carved hanging light fixture with a monkey centerpiece, share space with practical things, such as the row of white porcelain toilets..
.
With 12,000 square feet of retail space, even 3,000 items can be neatly displayed in the lower level at 366 N.
48th St., so you don’t have to pick and paw through stacks of miscellaneous stuff.
These things have been cleaned up, checked and put back together.
Some even come with an explanation about what it is or where it's been..
.
Jane Cogan, who recently built a new home, appreciated having the Lundbergs share her vision and then work with the builders to make it all come together seamlessly in the finished rooms..
.
“You want character,” Cogan said, “and that comes from mixing old with new.”.
.
Cogan knew the Lundbergs, and they began to collaborate as soon as the house plans were available.
In the end, about 40 refurbished items were used in the house, from a mantel to light fixtures to a sink and towel bars, Steen Lundberg said..
.
After tearing their main bathroom in a 1921 Craftsman-style bungalow down to bare studs, Amy Sack and her husband, Russell, rebuilt the room completely with items from the Lundbergs' store.
The Sacks were neighbors of the Lundbergs, and when they went to the store, they found much of what they needed -- from tile to toilet.
What they didn't find in the initial visit, Steen Lundberg found later on buying trips to search for more stock..
.
“He kept our list in mind, then sent us pictures when he found something,” Amy Sack said..
.
Her favorite find was the chiseled and tumbled marble tile on the floor in a warm terra-cotta color.
Using oiled bronze faucets, a cast iron tub and pedestal sink, she felt like they were able to get high-end finishes for moderate prices.
Their total bathroom budget -- including fixtures, labor (the two of them did some of it themselves) and installation -- was $5,000, and they were well within that when it was completed, she said..
.
Many of the store’s items come from the Rocky Mountain regions of Colorado.
The Lundbergs lived in Denver for many years before moving to Lincoln and have been involved in building/rebuilding as a couple for more than 20 years.
They spent about six months getting inventory for their new store, and Steen Lundberg goes to Colorado every few months to pick and choose from available merchandise..
.
“I’m a regular on the California Zephyr,” he said..
.
Luxurious mountain homes getting remodeled in Aspen, for example, might turn up some unique, high-end items.
Or antique shops in small, out-of-the-way places..
.
It was in one of those dusty, musty antique shops that Steen Lundberg found one of his most surprising treasures.
He purchased five small sconces, which he had seen on a previous trip, and brought them back to be cleaned up.
They were originally priced at $150 each and didn’t attract much interest from buyers, he said.
But as they were being cleaned, something unexpected turned up: the glass was signed “Lalique,” a famous French label..
.
With a little Internet research they discovered how much they really were worth -- a lot more than $150 each -- and sold them quickly online..
.
The Lundbergs admit that kind of discovery doesn’t happen very often, but they do believe there are lots of bargains and surprises to be found in recycled items.
By personally selecting them, they are able to keep a specific level of quality and uniqueness, Steen Lundberg said.
Occasionally they will accept a “handpicked” consignment item, such as an oak fireplace mantel that came from a long-gone Lincoln home..
.
Part of what they are doing now is passing along information about their store’s inventory and educating their customers about brands and possible uses for pieces.
They try to price items at about 50 percent of the Internet retail value.
Interior designers, homebuilders and homeowners who are remodeling are the logical store customers..
.
In Colorado, this kind of selectively reused/repurposed store is fairly common, Jody Lundberg said.
And in Lincoln, there are other retail reuse options, such as the EcoStore, or thrift stores, but with a different philosophy about acquiring and displaying the inventory..
.
Eight months into this venture, the Lundbergs are optimistic about this market and their choices.
They have noticed a real upswing since January and believe homebuilding is on the rise, too.
Now if they just could sell that monkey chandelier..
.
AND GUESS WHAT? They were sad to see it go, but we did sell that Monkey Light!!! .
