Detailed description is Martial Arts Society Soke’ Kevin Allen Sr (How it started).
My beginning in the martial arts started when I met this kid by the name of Billy Burnham (Abdul Rahman Hassan) in or around 1963-64 at the Lincoln Village in Asbury Park, Nj .He had come to stay with his aunt and uncle, before he came we knew his brother Wayne he would talk about his brothers a lot before they came.
Billy would talk about this thing called karate I had never heard of it before, but it explained this school that was down near the AP HIGH SCHOOL, which turned out to be an instructor by the name of Robin Riley I believe his name was and he taught Shotokan.
Billy had lots of books from Ginchen Funakoshi (The Way Of Karate) and a lot of others especially GM Mas Oyama's books we would read them, then we would go in his hallway and practice.
I remember we would hide in the basement and wait for the maintanance man to leave and open it up for Billy to teach us this thing called karate, you see back then we were into boxing and Cassius Clay.
My uncle and cousins use to teach me how to box.You see Asbury Park,Nj was a pretty rough place back then.
Heck if you came to Asbury and said you were a Black belt you got tested right there on the street.
Anyway I did this for a couple years then we moved to Tinton Falls, Nj in the fall of 1968.
The summer of 1969 started training Judo with Sensei Cyril Cousins from England on the Asbury circle with my brother Jerome.
By then Billy had met the great Shihan Isaac Henry Jr and started training in Wado Ryu (BKG).
In 1970 in the summer I would stay with my grandmother and Billy started teaching at the Westside Community Center underneath the stage.
We moved back to Asbury Park, NJ around 73-74 and I taught in my mothers’ basement while Billy opened a dojo on corlies ave I was with him to choose the place and to help build it.
74-75 I also trained with Grandmaster JH Kim at Brookdale College and his Sea Girt dojo in Isshinryu, and with my cousin Master Sulfond Ishmael in the art of Bear Silat at the Allenwood Middle School until I went in to the Army.
I got stationed in Germany and while there trained with Sifu Ted Lee Sgt 1st class he taught Pa-kau Chinese Boxing.
During that time I fought 7 underground fights winning 6 -0-1 and that 1 almost got me killed lol.
After becoming a member of the International Fighting Arts Assoc.
In Europe, came home in 77 with the rank of sandan 3rd degree black and started training with Billy at YMCA on main st.
In 78 myself and my brother begin to train with the Great GM Ray Martin on hwy 36 in Hazlet, Nj.
Then I went to Cali for 7 months and taught in Culver City, Then friends of mine opened a dojo on Broadway in Long Branch, Nj across the street from the Long Branch police station and sought out my help to run the dojo we had the dojo for about 2yrs and then my wife went in the army and we were stationed at Fort Dix.
In 1981 I created the Pak-Ryu Do Jutsu System with the help of Hanshi Ronald Lee Brown and took over the Fort Dix program where I taught the Military, Mp’s and Dependants until the post closed in 84-85.
After Fort Dix I taught in a few community centers and then in 91 was in a car accident where I suffered headaches for 6yrs everyday, the headaches went away in 97 and I begin to teach again with Master Robert Lewis on cookman ave in AP, Nj.
Moved to Baltimore in 1999 and in 2006 my blood pressure went to 295/160 and for the next 4yrs I spent trying to recover so in 2010 I started to teach for Brooklyn Md in the Boys and Girls Club and at the Bay Brook Recreation Center in Brooklyn Md and The Child First After School program.
