Detailed description is Enjoy weekly sessions learning, discussing, & practicing the great art of ‘MCing’ or ‘rapping’, in a small, fun, inclusive ‘classroom environment'.
Rap Class: Calgary will take place at the Capitol Hill Community Center, each Tuesday evening, beginning Jan 6, 2015.
It is a 10 week course, open to anybody 18+.
Price is $100 for 10X 90 minute sessions.
All class members will get the chance to record on a group song, and perform for classmates and friends at the 'Rap Up Party'.

As hip hop and rap music continue to have great popularity, more and more people are discovering the feelings of excitement, expression and accomplishment that can be achieved through writing and performing raps.
The School of Rhyme is a weekly course that offers people of all genders, backgrounds and skill levels a chance to learn, discuss, and participate in the act of rapping or MCing, over the course of ten weeks.
The class is for students 18+.
One evening per week, a small class will meet to develop their technique, and enjoy rapping with one another in a positive, supportive, and inclusive environment.
The class will be equal parts learning and doing.
We’ll examine and discuss the various structural and stylistic techniques that rappers use to make their rhymes entertaining, inspiring, and compelling.
These lessons will then be put to work through fun writing challenges and group rapping circles.
By the time the course concludes, each participant will have had the chance to record a verse for a group song, and to perform for their classmates and friends at the class rap up party.

If you’re a beginner, with zero experience, the class will offer you a chance to learn something new, and practice in a low-pressure environment.
If you’re already rapping, you will enjoy the chance to participate in the conversation, and to rap with a supportive group on a weekly basis.

Give yourself one night a week to do something fun, exciting and interesting.
Just as others emerge from yoga or dance classes feeling energized and fulfilled, you will come to look forward to the boost of energy you receive on ‘rap class night’! .

About the Instructor.
Jonathan Stoddart has rapped under the name ‘Ricca Razor Sharp’ for two decades.
During this time, he has performed over 350 times, and in 9 different provinces.
He has written and recorded 9 albums, which have charted on college radio across Canada.
In addition to his written material, he has engaged audiences with off the head freestyles, and has won numerous competitive ‘freestyle battles’.
Additionally, he is frequently hired to write and perform custom rap songs or spoken word pieces at private, corporate or community events.
He has also worn the hats of promoter, manager and public relations/media organizer..
As a student of the hip-hop genre, Jonathan has broken down the techniques which rappers use to create interesting rhymes.
He is focused on presenting this class in a manner which is fun, personable and relaxing for all involved.

What Can I Expect? .
Hip hop lyricism, or ‘rapping’ can be best divided into two areas of talent: writing (the ability to create lyrics), and flow (the ability to deliver them smoothly over a beat).
Both aspects will be practiced in our class.

On a weekly basis, 10-12 students will meet to discuss the writing techniques of the masters.
What is a ‘double syllable rhyme’? What is ‘call and response’? What is ‘first person story telling’? There are dozens of concepts to be covered.
Examples, and class discussion, will further solidify the points.

Explanations of the concepts will be accompanied by mini ‘in class’ writing challenges, and slightly larger ‘homework’ writing assignments.
Students will then be encouraged to share their writing, by performing it for the class.
Practicing your rhymes in such an intimate and low-pressure environment will not only help with flow, but will teach voice projection, and inspire the confidence necessary to overcome feelings of shyness.

It should be noted that the ‘homework’ writing assignments are not mandatory (Life is busy, we get it) and that performing in front of the class is also optional.
We believe that the more you put into the class, the more you will get out of it, but nightmare images of being dragged, against your will, to the front of the class, are not what we are about.
